Green Bay Packers Vs Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers: Scouting report, prediction

Coach: Mike McCarthy (131-77-1 overall, 131-77-1 with Packers)

Key players: QB Brett Hundley, RB Jamal Williams, LB Clay Matthews, CB Damarious Randall, DT Mike Daniels

Last game: Lost to the Vikings, 16-0

Last meeting: Nov. 6: Lions won, 30-17

The buzz: The Packers will miss the playoffs this season for the first time since 2008, though there’s good reason for it as they’ve been without two-time MVP Aaron Rodgers most of the season. Hundley will make his ninth start, but he’ll be without his two best receivers (Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson) and running back Aaron Jones. The Packers don’t have much left on offense, though Williams did run for 113 yards in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this month. Defensively, the Packers are depleted as well, as Nick Perry will miss his second straight game with shoulder and ankle injuries. Randall has four interceptions this year, and he and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix give the Packers a nice 1-2 combination in the secondary. Like the Lions, though, the Packers don’t have anything to play for Sunday as their eyes already are on 2018.

Scouting report and prediction
Lions run offense vs. Packers run defense

The Lions are once again last in the NFL in rushing offense at 78 yards per game, and barring a miracle, Sunday will mark their 70th straight game (including the playoffs) without a 100-yard rusher.

Theo Riddick has emerged as the Lions’ starting running back, but it’s really a timeshare with Tion Green and even Ameer Abdullah still in the mix. Riddick is a versatile weapon in the passing game, Green is a physical runnerand Abdullah still is the best rusher of the group, though he seems to be in the doghouse. Whoever gets the bulk of the carries, he’ll be running behind the Lions’ 11th starting offensive line combination of the season.

The Packers allow 116.1 yards rushing per game, but they don’t give up many big plays on the ground. They held the Lions to just 64 yards rushing in their November meeting, but have struggled of late with their last five opponents all topping the century mark.
Edge: Packers

Lions pass offense vs. Packers pass defense
Matthew Stafford had his way with the Packers in November, throwing for 361 yards while completing 78.8 percent of his passes. The Lions averaged nearly 10 yards a pass attempt that game, and both Golden Tate and Marvin Jones topped 100 yards receiving.

The Packers don’t have the secondary depth to keep up with all the Lions’ offensive weapons if Stafford is on. Jones, in particular, has torched Green Bay for 388 yards receiving and four touchdowns in three games as a Lion, and tight end Eric Ebron is playing his best football of the season.

Outside linebacker Nick Perry won’t play for the Packers on Sunday, though Clay Matthews and Mike Daniels still make for a menacing pass rush, Damarious Randall has had a solid season with four interceptions, but the Packers are vulnerable in their sub packages.
Edge: Lions
